Streak-free glass comes down to squeegee technique, solution mix, and blade maintenance. Traditional squeegee methods handle accessible windows; water-fed pole systems reach upper floors without ladders. Clean the frames, sills, and screens — not just the glass.

Squeegee Technique

Two primary methods produce professional results. The fan method starts at the top corner and pulls the squeegee across in a fanning arc, wiping the blade after each stroke. The straight pull runs the squeegee top-to-bottom in overlapping vertical strips. Whichever method you use, overlap each pass by approximately 1 inch and keep the rubber blade in constant contact with the glass throughout the stroke. Wipe the blade with a clean lint-free cloth after every pass. Apply cleaning solution evenly with a scrubber sleeve before squeegeeing, then detail edges with a microfiber cloth to catch remaining water trails. Replace squeegee rubber the moment it shows nicks, tears, or uneven wear — a bad blade guarantees streaks.

Solutions and Hard Water Treatment

Standard mix is 1–2 drops of dish soap per gallon of clean water — excess suds create more problems than they solve. For light mineral deposits, use 1 part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Heavy hard water spots require a specialized stain remover or oxalic acid solution applied with a white scrub pad in gentle circular motions. Never use abrasive pads on tempered or coated glass — check the glass type first. Rinse thoroughly after any hard water treatment to prevent chemical residue. In cold weather, add isopropyl alcohol to keep the solution from freezing on the glass. Water-fed pole systems run distilled or deionized water for spot-free drying without squeegeeing.

Ladder Safety and High-Reach Systems

Upper-floor windows demand strict height-safety protocols. Use a ladder stabilizer bar when leaning against a building — it protects the siding and improves stability. Maintain three points of contact at all times and keep your belt buckle between the rails. Never overreach. Water-fed pole systems eliminate ladder use for windows up to 3–4 stories and deliver streak-free results with purified water. Inspect telescoping pole sections and clamps before each use. For large-scale commercial jobs, consider boom lift or scaffold access. Any ladder work above 10 feet requires a spotter on the ground.
