Field Measurements & Calculators
Quick Reference
This is your go-to reference for on-the-job math. Instead of guessing material quantities or calling the office, use these formulas, conversion tables, and estimation guides to get accurate numbers in the field. Bookmark this page — you will use it constantly.
Quick Reference
- 1 Cubic Yard: 27 cubic feet / ~1.4 tons gravel
- 1 Acre: 43,560 sq ft
- Mulch at 3 in depth: 1 yard covers 108 sq ft
- Stride Estimate: ~2.5 ft per pace
- Salt per 1000 sqft: 2-4 lbs (lots) / 4 oz (walks)
- Seed Rate (Tall Fescue): 6-8 lbs per 1000 sq ft
Area & Volume Quick Formulas
Rectangle: Length × Width (e.g., 40 ft × 25 ft = 1,000 sq ft). Triangle: (Base × Height) ÷ 2 (e.g., 20 ft × 10 ft ÷ 2 = 100 sq ft). Circle: Radius × Radius × 3.14 (e.g., 10 ft radius = 314 sq ft). Cubic Yards: (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in inches) ÷ 324. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, and add them together. Quick field estimate: pace off distances — the average adult stride is about 2.5 feet. Count your paces and multiply by your stride length.
Common Area Calculations — Quick Reference
| Shape | Formula | Example | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | L × W | 50 ft × 30 ft | 1,500 sq ft |
| Triangle | (B × H) ÷ 2 | (40 ft × 20 ft) ÷ 2 | 400 sq ft |
| Circle | R × R × 3.14 | 15 ft × 15 ft × 3.14 | 706 sq ft |
| Half Circle | (R × R × 3.14) ÷ 2 | (10 × 10 × 3.14) ÷ 2 | 157 sq ft |
| Cubic Yards | (L × W × D inches) ÷ 324 | (50 × 30 × 3) ÷ 324 | 13.9 cu yd |
Material Estimation Guide
Use these tables to estimate how much material you need for a job. Always round up — running short costs more in fuel and time than having a little extra.
Material Coverage Rates
| Material | Unit | Coverage per Unit | Common Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mulch (bulk) | 1 cubic yard | 162 sq ft at 2 in / 108 sq ft at 3 in | 2–3 inches | Order 10% extra for waste and settling |
| Mulch (bagged, 2 cu ft) | 1 bag | 12 sq ft at 2 in / 8 sq ft at 3 in | 2–3 inches | About 13.5 bags per cubic yard |
| Topsoil | 1 cubic yard | 324 sq ft at 1 in / 108 sq ft at 3 in | 1–3 inches | Weighs ~2,200 lbs per yard |
| Gravel / Crushed Stone | 1 ton | 80 sq ft at 2 in / 50 sq ft at 3 in | 2–4 inches | 1 cubic yard ≈ 1.4 tons |
| Grass Seed (new lawn) | Per 1,000 sq ft | N/A | N/A | Kentucky Bluegrass: 2-3 lbs / Tall Fescue: 6-8 lbs / Perennial Rye: 6-8 lbs |
| Grass Seed (overseeding) | Per 1,000 sq ft | N/A | N/A | Use half the new lawn rate |
| Fertilizer (granular) | Per 1,000 sq ft | N/A | N/A | Check bag rate — typically 2.5-4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft |
| Rock Salt | Per 1,000 sq ft | N/A | N/A | Walkways: 4 oz / Lots: 2-4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft |
| Calcium Chloride | Per 1,000 sq ft | N/A | N/A | 1-2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft — less needed than rock salt |
| Paver Base (Class 5) | 1 ton | 80 sq ft at 3 in | 4–6 inches | Compact in 2-inch lifts |
| Paver Sand (bedding) | 1 ton | 120 sq ft at 1 in | 1 inch | Screed to level before placing pavers |
| Concrete (bags, 80 lb) | 1 bag | 0.6 cu ft | N/A | About 45 bags per cubic yard |
Unit Conversions
Field crews need to convert between units constantly. Keep these conversions handy so you don't have to call the office or search your phone.
Common Unit Conversions
| From | To | Multiply By | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Feet | Acres | ÷ 43,560 | 21,780 sq ft = 0.5 acres |
| Acres | Square Feet | × 43,560 | 0.25 acres = 10,890 sq ft |
| Cubic Feet | Cubic Yards | ÷ 27 | 81 cu ft = 3 cu yd |
| Cubic Yards | Cubic Feet | × 27 | 2 cu yd = 54 cu ft |
| Gallons | Cubic Feet | ÷ 7.48 | 748 gal = 100 cu ft |
| Inches (depth) | Feet | ÷ 12 | 3 inches = 0.25 ft |
| Pounds | Tons | ÷ 2,000 | 3,000 lbs = 1.5 tons |
| Linear Feet | Yards | ÷ 3 | 150 lin ft = 50 yards |
| Miles | Feet | × 5,280 | 0.5 miles = 2,640 ft |
| Fahrenheit to Celsius | (°F − 32) × 5/9 | — | 86°F = 30°C |
