Downspouts carry water from the gutter trough to the ground and away from the foundation. A single clogged downspout backs water into the entire run, causing overflow, fascia damage, and foundation problems. Diagnose clogs fast, clear them completely, and confirm flow before leaving the site.

Clog Detection & Diagnosis

Water spilling over the gutter edge near a downspout outlet is the clearest sign of a clog. Tap along the downspout with your knuckles โ€” a dull thud means packed debris inside. Check siding near the downspout for water stains or mildew, which indicates chronic overflow. On the ground below, no splash pattern after rain confirms a blockage. Inspect elbow joints first; 90-degree bends are the most common clog point. On underground drain lines, look for water pooling at the downspout base instead of draining away. If multiple downspouts overflow at once, suspect a shared underground drain blockage.

Clearing Techniques

Start at the bottom. Disconnect the lower elbow and check for a clog at the base. If the blockage is higher, feed a plumber's snake or drain auger from the top to break through compacted debris. A high-pressure garden hose nozzle inserted from the top can flush moderate clogs. For stubborn blockages, disassemble downspout sections to access the material directly. Elbow joints can be removed and cleaned by hand. On underground drain connections, use a sewer snake or hydro-jet from the downspout opening. After clearing, run water from the gutter through the full downspout to confirm free flow. Reassemble all sections with screws โ€” loose joints leak and separate over time.

Underground Drain Assessment

Identify all underground drain entry points and discharge locations during the initial site walk. Run water through each line and verify discharge at the outlet โ€” daylight drain, dry well, or storm sewer. If water backs up at the downspout base, the underground line is clogged or collapsed. Collapsed pipes require excavation and replacement; document and quote that work separately. Tree roots are a leading cause of underground drain failure, so note nearby trees in your assessment. If underground drains chronically fail, recommend above-ground downspout extensions as an alternative. Always include underground drain condition in the service report for the customer.
