Leak Detection & Sealant Application
Leaks are the most common gutter issue, concentrated at joints, corners, and end caps. Run water through each gutter run and visually inspect every seam for drips. Mark leak locations with a wax pencil or tape so you can find them after the gutter dries. Clean and dry the area thoroughly before applying sealant — adhesion fails on wet or dirty surfaces. Use gutter-specific sealant (tripolymer or silicone-based); standard caulk will not withstand water flow and temperature swings. Apply sealant to the interior of the gutter at the joint, creating a continuous bead across the seam. For larger gaps or holes, use a gutter patch kit with metal flashing and sealant. Allow full cure time per the product instructions before testing flow.
Hanger Replacement & Slope Correction
Sagging gutter sections mean failed or missing hangers. Inspect hanger spacing — it should be every 24–36 inches along the run. Replace bent or broken hangers with the same type: hidden hanger with screw, spike and ferrule, or strap hanger. Drive 3-inch minimum screws through the fascia into the rafter tail for a solid hold. If the fascia board is rotted, the hanger will not hold — flag fascia replacement as a separate line item. Correct slope is 1/4 inch of drop per 10 feet of run toward the nearest downspout. Check slope with a level and string line across each run, then adjust hangers up or down to restore proper grade. Standing water in a level or back-sloped gutter accelerates rust, breeds mosquitoes, and feeds ice dams.
Rust, Corrosion & Replacement Assessment
Surface rust on steel gutters can be treated with a wire brush and rust-inhibiting primer. Aluminum gutters do not rust but corrode at contact points with dissimilar metals — galvanic corrosion. Pitting or holes larger than a quarter-inch generally warrant section replacement rather than patching. Gutters pulling away from the fascia across an entire run indicate systemic hanger failure or fascia rot; recommend full replacement. Seamless aluminum gutters are the industry standard for replacement — record exact measurements for fabrication. Copper gutters demand specialized repair: no standard sealants, no dissimilar metal fasteners. Document all damage with photos and provide the customer a written assessment with an estimate for recommended repairs or replacement.
