Three phases turn a construction site into a move-in-ready space: rough clean, detail clean, final clean. Each phase builds on the last. Skip a phase and the dust and debris from earlier stages compromise your finish work. Coordinate with the general contractor to confirm all construction is complete before starting the final clean.

Phased Cleanup Approach

Phase 1 (Rough Clean) removes all large debris, scrap materials, packaging, and trash. Sweep or shovel bulk debris, clear leftover building materials, and open pathways. Phase 2 (Detail Clean) addresses surfaces — wipe down countertops and cabinets, clean interior windows, polish fixtures, and vacuum all floors. Hit light switch plates, outlet covers, and door hardware. Phase 3 (Final Clean) is the touch-up pass: final vacuum and mop, mirror and glass polish, baseboard wipe-down, and floor buffing if applicable. Allow time between phases for airborne dust to settle before progressing to the next level. Confirm all construction work is complete before starting Phase 3.

Debris Removal and Dust Control

Sort debris into recyclable materials, landfill waste, and reusable items. Use industrial-grade trash bags for heavy debris — standard bags tear immediately. Rent or bring a dumpster for large jobs. Fine construction dust (drywall, sawdust, concrete) requires HEPA-filter vacuums. Wipe surfaces with damp microfiber cloths — dry wiping just spreads dust around. Change HVAC filters after construction to prevent recirculating dust through the system, and vacuum all vents and returns as part of the detail clean. Hit the hidden spots: inside cabinets, closet shelves, window tracks, and behind doors.

Adhesive, Paint, and Sticker Removal

Use a razor blade scraper at a shallow 15–20° angle to remove paint drips and adhesive from glass. Apply a commercial adhesive remover (Goo Gone or equivalent) for label and sticker residue on fixtures — test on an inconspicuous area first, since some solvents damage certain finishes. Remove painter's tape residue with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Use plastic scrapers on delicate surfaces (countertops, appliance faces) to avoid scratching. Dried paint on hard floors loosens with moisture and a razor blade. Caulk smears on tile or glass scrape off cleanly once fully cured. Document any pre-existing damage (scratches, chips, stains) before starting removal work.

  • All construction debris and trash removed from site
  • Floors vacuumed, mopped, or buffed as appropriate for material
  • All windows cleaned (interior and exterior) including frames and tracks
  • Countertops, cabinets, and shelving wiped down inside and out
  • All fixtures (lights, outlets, switches) cleaned and polished
  • Bathrooms sanitized including toilets, sinks, tubs, and tile
  • Appliance surfaces cleaned and stickers removed
  • Paint drips, adhesive residue, and caulk smears removed
  • HVAC vents and returns vacuumed or wiped
  • Baseboards, door frames, and trim wiped clean
  • Final walk-through with contractor or customer completed
