Junk removal crews encounter hazardous conditions on almost every job — dust, mold, animal waste, pests, household chemicals, scrap metal, and demolition debris. This page tells you what PPE to wear, how to assess the site before touching anything, when to stop work and escalate, and how to decontaminate before you leave. Read this before any job involving an abandoned property, hoarding cleanup, demolition debris, or unknown materials.

Pre-Job Mobilization Checklist

Before leaving the shop for any hazardous junk removal job, verify this gear is loaded in the truck. Running back for supplies mid-job is a productivity killer — and on a biohazard or heavy-debris job, it can mean sending a crew member out in contaminated clothes. Pack everything on this list before departure.

  • Case of water (1 per crew member minimum) — dehydration risk is elevated in full PPE
  • Gatorade or electrolyte drinks — essential on long jobs in Tyvek suits
  • Snacks for long jobs — pack before leaving; food stops are harder to make mid-job in contaminated gear
  • Lawn chairs (1 per crew member) and a small folding table — for breaks away from the work area
  • Rubber boots — required for any job with moisture, animal waste, or chemical exposure
  • 9mm cut-resistant gloves — for sharp debris handling over or under nitrile gloves
  • N95 respirators and/or P100 half-face respirator with filters — match to the identified hazard level
  • Disposable dust masks — backup respirators for crew members or light-duty adjacent work
  • Full Tyvek hazmat suits (one per crew member, plus one spare per truck)

Hazardous Job Tool Inventory

Every hazardous job requires a specific set of tools beyond the standard junk removal kit. Pack these before departure and verify they are all accounted for during the post-job truck check. Tools are organized below by function.

Match your protection to the hazard. Showing up without the right PPE means stopping the job to get it — or worse, continuing without it. Pre-Job Hazard Assessment

Walk the entire site before moving a single item. A 10-minute assessment prevents injuries, exposure events, and stop-work situations mid-job. Look for visible mold, animal nesting, pest activity, chemical containers, sharp material, and structural hazards. Note anything unusual and discuss with the crew before starting. If you cannot safely assess a space (no lighting, structural instability, unknown liquid on the floor), stop and call your supervisor before entry.

  • Identify all materials to be removed before starting
  • Check for visible mold, water damage, or moisture on surfaces
  • Look for animal nesting material, droppings, or live pests
  • Scan for chemical containers, spray cans, or unknown liquids
  • Check for sharp materials — scrap metal, broken glass, exposed nails, rebar
  • Assess structural condition — floors, ceilings, shelving that may collapse under load
  • Identify pre-1980 building materials (popcorn ceilings, floor tiles, pipe insulation) that may contain asbestos
  • Confirm adequate lighting and ventilation for all work areas
  • Select and put on appropriate PPE before handling any material

Dust & Allergens

Disturbing old debris, insulation, drywall, and accumulated dirt kicks up fine particles that can cause serious respiratory harm with repeated exposure. Dusty environments also conceal sharp objects and animal waste. Always put on your N95 before entering a heavily dusty space — not after you are already inside and coughing.

In enclosed spaces with heavy dust (attics, basements, crawl spaces), upgrade to a P100 half-face respirator. Open windows and doors for cross-ventilation before starting. Wet-mop or lightly mist floors with water to suppress dust before sweeping — never dry-sweep in enclosed spaces. Take regular breaks in fresh air during long dusty jobs. Remove and bag Tyvek suits before getting in the truck to avoid transferring dust to the vehicle interior.

Animal & Human Waste

Rodent droppings and urine carry hantavirus — a rare but potentially fatal respiratory illness. The rule is simple: never dry-sweep or vacuum rodent waste without a HEPA filter. Wet the area with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water), let it soak for 5 minutes, then pick up with paper towels and double-bag.

For bird droppings, wear N95 minimum and gloves. Psittacosis and histoplasmosis are real risks in heavy accumulations. For human waste of any kind — sewage, waste in containers, or undetermined source — do not proceed. This is an immediate stop-work condition.

STOP-WORK RULE: Any human waste situation, active sewage leak, or sewage-contaminated material requires immediate escalation to the supervisor. Do not handle. Do not attempt to clean up. Mark the area and call before proceeding.

  • Use paper towels — never a broom or regular vacuum — to collect wet waste
  • Double-bag all contaminated material in heavy-duty bags
  • Avoid touching face during cleanup — change gloves before touching skin
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing gloves
  • Discard Tyvek suits in a sealed bag — do not take into the truck cab

Pests & Infestations

Active pest infestations require a pest control professional — not a junk removal crew. Your job is to identify and escalate, not to exterminate. Common hazardous pest situations include: wasp and hornet nests hidden in clutter or walls, bedbug-infested furniture, active rodent nests, and cockroach infestations in stored items.

For wasps and hornets: if you discover a live nest, stop all work in that area immediately. Do not disturb the nest. Mark the location, alert the customer, and leave the area. Work can resume after a licensed exterminator has treated the nest.

For bedbugs: inspect mattresses, upholstered furniture, and soft goods before loading. Bedbug-infested items must be double-bagged in plastic before transport to prevent infestation of the truck. Some disposal facilities refuse bedbug-infested items — confirm before loading.

STOP-WORK RULE: Active wasp/hornet nests, suspected bedbug items being loaded without bagging, or any live pest situation that cannot be safely managed — stop work, notify the customer and supervisor before continuing.

  • Double-bag infested soft goods in sealed plastic before transport
  • Do not disturb wasp, hornet, or bee nests — stop work and escalate
  • Wear long sleeves and gloves when handling stored boxes or debris that may conceal nests
  • Notify customer of active infestations found during the job
  • Do not reload infestation risk items onto the same truck as clean material

Household Chemicals & Unknown Containers

Household cleaners, pesticides, paint, solvents, propane tanks, and automotive fluids show up on nearly every large cleanout. Most are manageable with proper identification and handling. Unknown containers — especially unlabeled, leaking, or damaged ones — are a different situation entirely.

For labeled household chemicals: do not mix different chemicals in the same bag or container. Keep them in their original containers. Route to a household hazardous waste (HHW) facility — never in the regular dumpster or truck load. Aerosol cans must not be punctured or crushed — transport upright and undamaged.

For propane tanks: do not load full or partially full propane tanks in an enclosed truck. Transport them upright and secured in the open truck bed only. Turn the valve fully off before transport.

STOP-WORK RULE: Unlabeled containers with unknown contents, leaking containers, strong chemical odors in an enclosed space, or any container that cannot be safely identified — stop work immediately. Evacuate the area, ventilate if possible, and call your supervisor before touching the material.

  • Do not mix different chemicals in the same bag or container
  • Keep chemicals in original sealed containers
  • Route all household chemicals to an HHW facility — not the dumpster
  • Transport propane tanks upright and secured in the open truck bed only
  • Escalate unlabeled or leaking containers immediately — do not handle

Scrap Metal & Sharp Debris

Scrap metal jobs produce puncture and laceration risks at every step — from picking up to loading. Cut-resistant gloves and steel-toed boots are non-negotiable. Long sleeves protect your forearms from sharp edges on sheet metal and rebar.

Watch for hidden hazards: protruding nails in lumber, broken glass in trash bags, exposed rebar in concrete chunks, and sharp edges on cut pipe. When picking up large metal pieces, clear your footing first — shifting debris underfoot while holding a heavy metal item is how people fall and get impaled.

Separate ferrous (iron and steel) from non-ferrous (aluminum, copper, brass) at the job site for maximum scrap value. Keep a magnet on the truck to quickly identify metals. Scrap metal typically has resale value — sort it and route to a scrap yard instead of the landfill.

  • Clear footing before lifting heavy or awkward metal pieces
  • Check bags and boxes for broken glass or sharp items before squeezing or tossing

  • Secure loose metal in the truck — shifting metal during transport is a hazard

Demolition Waste & Suspected Asbestos

Demolition debris from buildings constructed before 1980 may contain asbestos in floor tiles (9×9 inch vinyl), popcorn ceilings, pipe insulation, roofing shingles, and joint compound. Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are safe when intact and undisturbed — they become a health hazard when broken, sanded, drilled, or disturbed, releasing microscopic fibers that cause mesothelioma and lung cancer.

For post-1980 demolition debris: wear N95 minimum, gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat. Upgrade to P100 and Tyvek if fine particle dust is heavy.

For materials from pre-1980 buildings that show any of the following — 9×9 floor tiles, gray fibrous pipe wrap, textured ceiling material that crumbles, or old gray shingles — treat them as suspected ACM.

HARD STOP-WORK RULE — ASBESTOS: If any pre-1980 material is suspected to contain asbestos, STOP ALL WORK immediately. Do not cut, break, bag, or move the material. Mark the area, photograph what you found, and call your supervisor. Asbestos abatement requires licensed contractors. Crew members do not perform abatement — period. Violations carry significant legal and health consequences.

  • Do not cut, break, or disturb any suspected ACM

Dumpster Loading System

Hazardous jobs require a deliberate dumpster loading system — not just tossing debris over the side from ground level. A proper ramp-and-wheelbarrow workflow reduces physical strain, speeds up loading, and keeps the pile organized so you can fit more in the container. Set up the system before the first wheelbarrow load rolls.

  • RAMP OPTIONS: 2×6 lumber boards (cheapest, works for light to medium loads), vehicle ramps or bobcat ramps (heavy-duty, most stable), collapsible ladder laid flat (lightweight backup), side ladder mounted to dumpster wall (for climbing only, not wheelbarrow use)
  • SECURING THE RAMP: Place a counterweight (concrete block, sandbag) at the base to prevent kick-back under load, or drive a ground spike at the bottom edge — a ramp that shifts mid-push is a fall hazard
  • WHEELBARROW WORKFLOW: Load the wheelbarrow at the debris pile, roll to the ramp base, tip the load up the ramp in a controlled push — do not run or rush the ramp; keep a second crew member at the top to receive and spread loads
  • FILL STRATEGY — BACK TO FRONT: Start loading at the far back wall of the dumpster and work toward the door opening; this keeps the path clear and prevents early door blockage
  • INTERIOR vs. EXTERIOR LOADING: For most debris, use the ramp-in approach; for very large items (appliances, lumber, furniture), lift over the side from ramp height — never throw heavy items from ground level
  • FILL-HEIGHT RULE: Stop adding material when the pile reaches door-latch height — do not exceed it; the door must close for transport; once at pile height, throw remaining loose material over the side from ramp height to top off the container
  • PILE SHAPE: Build a level, even pile from back to front; peaked or side-heavy loads shift during transport and can cause the dumpster to tip or overflow on corners

Decontamination Station Setup

A decontamination station is a designated clean zone set up at the job site — ideally near the truck, away from the active work area — where crew members transition from contaminated to clean before entering the vehicle. Set it up at the start of the job, not after you are already done and covered in debris.

Use a folding table as the station surface. Keep all supplies in a single bin or bag so nothing gets left behind.

  • SUPPLIES: Dish soap (Dawn or equivalent), Clorox Clean-Up spray or equivalent disinfectant, a bucket or large container for foot bath water, disposable paper towels, clean heavy-duty trash bags for used PPE
  • FOOT BATH: Fill the bucket with water and a splash of dish soap; place it at the exit point of the work area; crew members step both boots through before walking to the truck — this removes the bulk of surface contamination from soles
  • GLOVE DISINFECTION BEFORE REMOVAL: Before taking off outer gloves, spray the gloved hands with Clorox Clean-Up and rub together for 15–20 seconds, then rinse with water; this prevents transferring contamination to bare skin during glove removal
  • GLOVE REMOVAL TECHNIQUE: Pinch the outside of one glove at the wrist and peel it inside-out; hold the removed glove in the still-gloved hand; slide two fingers under the cuff of the second glove and peel it off inside-out over the first — both gloves end up bagged without touching the outside surface
  • HANDWASHING: After gloves are off, wash hands and forearms with dish soap and water — use the remaining foot bath water if no running water is available; dry with paper towels
  • TYVEK REMOVAL: Remove Tyvek suits at the station, rolling them inside-out as you step out; bag immediately in a sealed trash bag — do not carry a loose Tyvek suit to the truck
  • STATION TEARDOWN: After all crew members have decontaminated, pour the foot bath water away from vehicles and storm drains, bag all used disposables, and wipe the table surface with disinfectant before folding and loading

End-of-Shift Decontamination

Decontamination is the step crews skip — and the step that spreads contamination from the job site to your truck, your home, and your family. After any job involving biohazard, mold, heavy dust, animal waste, or chemical exposure, run through this procedure before getting back in the truck cab.

Bag contaminated PPE at the job site — Tyvek suits, disposable gloves, and N95 respirators go into sealed trash bags before leaving the work area. Change into clean clothes if available. Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly before touching your face, phone, or food. Wipe down tools that contacted contaminated materials with disinfectant wipes before loading them back in the truck. Check your boots for material that could track into the cab.

  • Remove and bag all disposable PPE (Tyvek, gloves, N95) at the job site — not in the truck
  • Wash hands and exposed skin with soap and water before touching face or phone
  • Wipe tools that contacted biohazard or chemical material with disinfectant wipes
  • Check boot soles for material before entering the truck cab
  • Change to clean clothes after any biohazard or heavy chemical exposure job
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated clothing — do not take home for household laundry
  • Clean and disinfect any reusable PPE (rubber boots, hard hat) before storage
  • Report any suspected exposure (skin contact with waste, splash to eyes/mouth) to supervisor before leaving the site
