Hardscaping Basics

Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and edging — hardscaping is built on base prep and drainage. Get the gravel base right and everything above it stays level and stable for years. Skip it and you're tearing the job apart within two seasons.

Paver Installation Basics

Excavate to a minimum depth of 7–9 inches: 4–6 inches of gravel base, 1 inch of sand bedding, plus paver thickness. Use crushed stone or road base (Class 5 or equivalent) and compact it in 2-inch lifts with a plate compactor to 95% compaction.

1. Screed 1 inch of coarse bedding sand (ASTM C33) over the compacted base using pipes as guides. 2. Lay pavers in the chosen pattern (running bond, herringbone, basketweave) starting from a straight edge or corner. 3. Maintain consistent 1/8-inch joints using built-in spacer lugs or manual spacing. 4. Cut edge pavers with a wet saw or guillotine splitter — always wear eye and ear protection. 5. Sweep polymeric sand into joints and activate with a fine mist of water per manufacturer instructions. 6. Run the plate compactor over the finished surface with a protective pad to seat pavers into the sand bed.

Retaining Walls & Edging

Walls over 4 feet in height typically require engineering and permits — verify local codes before starting. Excavate a trench 6 inches deep and 24 inches wide for the base course of segmental retaining wall blocks. Set the base course dead level using compacted gravel; this is the most critical step for wall integrity. Step back (batter) each successive course per manufacturer specs, typically 1/4 inch per course.

Install drainage aggregate and perforated drain tile behind the wall to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup. For edging, aluminum and steel edging get secured with 10-inch landscape spikes every 12–18 inches. Natural stone edging gets set in a compacted gravel base and backfilled with soil. Choose based on aesthetics and budget.

Drainage Considerations

Grade all paved surfaces with a minimum 1% slope (1/8 inch per foot) away from structures. Install channel drains at the base of driveways, patios adjacent to buildings, and low-lying areas. Use perforated corrugated pipe wrapped in filter fabric for subsurface drainage runs, and direct all downspout discharge and drainage outlets at least 6–10 feet from foundations. For persistent standing water or soggy soil, install a French drain. Always verify drainage flow direction before excavation — water must have a clear outlet.
