Dig the right hole, handle roots correctly, amend the soil, and water deep on day one. These four steps determine whether a $200 tree thrives or dies within a year. In northern Minnesota (Zone 3b–4a), schedule all planting from mid-May through June after the last frost date, which is approximately May 20 in the Duluth area.

Tree & Shrub Planting

Dig the hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball but only as deep as the root ball height. The root flare — where the trunk widens at the base — must sit at or slightly above grade level, never buried. Remove all burlap, wire baskets, and container pots before backfilling; cut away synthetic burlap completely. Score the root ball with a knife on container-grown plants to break circling roots.

Backfill with native soil mixed with 20–30% compost. Avoid heavy amendments that create a "bathtub effect" where water pools in rich soil surrounded by clay. Build a shallow soil berm around the hole to retain water during the initial soak. Stake trees only on windy sites or for top-heavy specimens — use flexible ties and remove stakes after one year. Water deeply immediately: saturate the entire root zone.

Flower & Annual Installation

Till beds 4–6 inches deep and work in compost or peat moss before planting. Space annuals per the plant tag recommendations, accounting for mature spread — not the size you see in the flat. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container; never bury stems deeper. Pinch off existing flowers at planting time to redirect energy toward root establishment.

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) at planting. Water gently with a soft spray to settle soil around roots without washing anything away. Finish with 1–2 inches of fine mulch around the annuals, keeping it off the stems.

Soil Amendments & Watering-In

Test soil pH before amending — most plants prefer 6.0–7.0. Raise pH with lime; lower it with sulfur. Incorporate organic matter (compost, aged manure) to improve drainage in clay soils and water retention in sandy soils. Apply mycorrhizal inoculant to the root zone of trees and shrubs for enhanced nutrient uptake.

Water-in all new plantings immediately with a slow, deep soak — the entire root zone should be saturated. For the first 2–4 weeks, water every 2–3 days, then transition to 1 inch per week. Watch for transplant shock: wilting, leaf drop, or yellowing. If you see it, increase watering frequency.
