Safety — Read Before Every Use
The brush-cutter with a metal blade installed is in a different safety category than any other handheld on the truck. Kickback from a metal blade is violent and fast — it does not give you time to react. Every item below is non-negotiable.
- PPE is mandatory and non-optional: ANSI Z87.1 face shield (not just glasses), hearing protection, heavy long pants (chaps preferred for dense brush), steel-toe or composite-toe boots, snug-fitting gloves, long sleeves
- Two-handed grip at ALL times — never one-handed, never overhead, never above shoulder height
- Harness/shoulder strap REQUIRED — adjust so the blade hangs at mid-thigh when relaxed; tool weight on the strap, not your arms
- Clearance: NO ONE within 50 ft (15 m) — bystanders, coworkers, pets, vehicles. Stop the engine if anyone enters the zone.
- Blade-rated shield/guard ONLY — the smaller string-trimmer guard DOES NOT protect against the metal blade; confirm the correct shield is installed before starting
- Cut with the 8-to-11-o'clock zone only (left edge swinging right-to-left). The 12-to-3-o'clock zone is the kickback zone — the blade grabs and throws the tool back at you, fast.
- Match blade to growth: confirm blade rating with shop; do NOT cut anything thicker than the blade is rated for — drop to a chainsaw or hand tool
- Keep the blade sharp: a dull blade grabs instead of slices, increasing kickback risk; inspect for bent teeth, cracks, missing teeth before every use — retire any damaged blade
- Confirm blade bolt torque is correct and rotation arrow on the blade matches gearbox direction (cutting edge leads)
- Refuel engine off and cool only; use ONLY PREMIUM 91+ at 50:1 from a can labeled "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM"
- Never set the tool down with the engine running; never carry it running with the trigger held
Kickback Warning — Non-Negotiable
- Cutting in the 12-to-3-o'clock zone WILL cause kickback — the blade grabs and violently throws the tool back toward the operator
- Always cut with the 8-to-11-o'clock zone (left edge of blade, right-to-left sweep motion)
- If you feel the blade grabbing or stalling, immediately release the trigger and pull back — do not force through
- A kickback incident is a technique/PPE failure — re-train before further use
Fuel & Oil
Same fuel rules as the Stihl trimmer — PREMIUM 50:1 mix, can labeled and dated.
- PREMIUM 91+ at 50:1 ratio — same shop standard as all 2-cycle tools
- Can must be labeled "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM" with date before fueling
- Fuel under 30 days old; stabilizer if sitting >2 weeks
- Never use straight gas in a 2-cycle engine
Before Each Use
Before every use — not just the first time. Every single deployment.
- Blade-rated shield installed and secured — NOT the string-trimmer guard
- Blade inspected: no cracks, no missing or bent teeth, no warping
- Blade bolt torqued to spec; rotation arrow on blade matches gearbox direction
- Harness/shoulder strap adjusted so blade hangs at mid-thigh at rest
- 50 ft clearance zone clear of all bystanders, coworkers, pets, vehicles
- Fuel cap: "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM" label verified before fueling
- PPE on: face shield, hearing protection, heavy pants/chaps, steel-toe boots, gloves, long sleeves
- Two-handed grip confirmed before starting
Maintenance Schedule
