Fuel & Oil

PREMIUM (91+ octane) unleaded in both tanks — shop standard for all small engines. E10 (10% ethanol) max. Never E15 or E85.

Refuel a COLD engine only. Wipe the area around both caps before opening to keep grit out of the tank. Stabilizer if the machine will sit more than 2 weeks. Fuel under 30 days old — dump and refill anything older.

  • Both tanks: PREMIUM 91+ unleaded; E10 max
  • Engine oil: SAE 10W-40 API SJ or higher — check before every use, top off if below the full mark
  • Hydro fluid: Hydro-Gear 20W-50 (sealed system) — sight-glass check only. Do not top off without shop sign-off.
  • Stabilizer required for any fuel sitting more than 2 weeks
  • Never E15, E85, or diesel

Before Each Use

This check is non-negotiable before the machine leaves the shop or the trailer. 60 seconds. Every time.

  • Tire pressure: front casters 25 psi, rear drive 12 psi
  • Engine oil at the full mark — correct grade (SAE 10W-40)
  • Fuel level adequate; both caps tight
  • Hydro fluid at sight glass — flag any drop without explanation
  • Blade condition: no cracks, no bends, edge is sharp, bolt torque looks intact
  • Deck underside scraped clean; discharge chute in place and unobstructed
  • All guards and shrouds in place
  • ROPS fully upright and latched — always; no exceptions
  • Seatbelt in good condition and buckled before operating
  • Safety interlock test: PTO OFF, parking brake SET, operator in seat — all required before engine will crank
  • Look under and around the machine for bystanders, pets, and debris before starting

Troubleshooting

Try the field fix first. Stop and call the shop for anything listed as 'Stop & Call.'

Stop & Call the Shop — Do Not Field-Fix These
  • Any hydraulic leak on the Gravely — stop the machine immediately, tag out, do not continue
  • Cracked spindle housing or spindle wobble under load — can throw a blade
  • Belt shredding repeatedly or burning smell at the deck — suspect seized idler or misaligned sheave
  • Oil leak from valve cover, head gasket, or crankshaft seal — don't top off; shop assesses the source first
