Fuel & Oil

Always mix with PREMIUM 91+ base gas — never regular or mid-grade. The fuel can must be labeled "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM" with the date mixed before you fuel the tool. If the label is wrong or missing, stop and check before pouring.

  • Base gas: PREMIUM 91+ octane; non-ethanol preferred; E10 max if non-ethanol unavailable
  • Mix ratio: 50:1 — 2.6 oz of JASO FD or ISO-L-EGD rated 2-cycle oil per gallon
  • Confirm the fuel can label says "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM" and shows a date before fueling
  • Fuel age: under 30 days; add stabilizer if the can or tool will sit longer
  • Never use: straight gas in a 2-cycle engine (causes seizure), wrong ratio, or E15/E85
  • Pre-mixed cans (TruFuel 50:1, VP) are approved and preferred for tools that sit between jobs

Before Each Use

Quick pre-job check before the Stihl leaves the truck.

  • Fuel cap label: "MIX 50:1 — PREMIUM" — confirm before fueling
  • Fuel level adequate; cap tight and not leaking

  • Guard in place and secured — correct guard for the head installed (string guard, not blade guard)
  • Drive shaft: clear of wrapped string or debris from last job
  • Trigger and safety lever move freely and return to zero
  • Air filter: not visibly clogged or gray
  • PPE: safety glasses, hearing protection, long pants, closed-toe boots
