Fuel & Oil

The Toro is the pickiest machine in the fleet for fuel. Non-ethanol preferred — always. Fresh fuel only — this engine suffers from ethanol-related gum and varnish faster than the larger engines. Stabilizer is non-optional for any fuel sitting more than 2 weeks.

  • PREMIUM 91+ non-ethanol preferred; E10 only if non-ethanol unavailable; NEVER E15 or E85
  • Fuel freshness: under 30 days old — dump and refill anything older
  • Stabilizer (Sta-Bil or equivalent) if the can or tank will sit more than 2 weeks
  • Engine oil: SAE 30 standard; 10W-30 in cold weather (below 40 °F)
  • Oil capacity: ~18 oz — no dipstick on some units; fill to the bottom of the fill neck, then check level when tilted level
  • Fuel shutoff: turn to OFF before transport, tilting for service, or end-of-season storage

Before Each Use

BBC is the most critical safety feature on this machine — verify it every single use.

  • Tires: solid plastic — no pressure checks needed; inspect for cracks or damage
  • Engine oil at the fill neck level
  • Fuel level adequate; cap tight; fuel shutoff OPEN
  • Blade condition: both timed blades sharp, no cracks or bends — replace as a pair if one fails
  • Deck underside scraped clean
  • BBC bail engages cleanly when squeezed — blades spin within 1 second
  • BBC bail disengages within 3 seconds of release — if blades don't stop, take out of service immediately
  • Personal Pace drive responds to handle pressure — verify cable isn't binding
