Snow blowers and throwers are the most efficient tools for driveways, walkways, and medium-sized areas. Using an underpowered unit in heavy wet snow leads to clogs, overheating, and wasted time. Match the machine to the snow conditions before you start.

Snow Blower Operation Guidelines

Single-stage blowers handle light, dry snow up to 4 inches on paved surfaces — the auger contacts the ground, so never use them on gravel. Two-stage blowers are the standard workhorse for most residential and commercial walkway work, handling 4–12 inches wet or dry on any surface (adjust skid shoes for gravel). Three-stage blowers deliver maximum power for deep drifts, heavy wet snow, and end-of-driveway plow berms — the accelerator auger breaks up packed snow before the impeller throws it.

Aim the chute away from buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic. Set chute direction before engaging the auger, not while snow is already throwing. Clear driveways in straight passes from the center outward, throwing to both sides. For walkways, make a single center pass first, then widen with overlapping passes. Never clear a jam with the engine running — shut off, remove the key, and use the clean-out tool. In extreme cold (below 0°F), warm the engine 2–3 minutes before engaging the auger to prevent belt damage. Check and adjust skid shoes for the surface type. Keep fuel tanks full with stabilizer added — cold temperatures cause condensation in partially filled tanks.

Northern Minnesota note: Lake-effect snow from Lake Superior produces heavy, wet snow with high water content that puts extra strain on augers and impellers. Check shear pins more frequently during and after lake-effect events — carry a full set of spares on every truck. Wet, dense snow clogs chutes faster; reduce intake speed and clear jams promptly to prevent auger damage.
