The plow truck is the backbone of commercial snow removal — nothing else clears large paved areas as fast. Improper technique leads to surface damage, stacking problems, and callback complaints. Master blade selection and plow patterns before you get behind the wheel.
Blade Selection & Plowing Techniques
Straight blades are the most versatile option for general plowing — open lots, long runs, and straightforward windrow passes. V-plows break through deep drifts, heavy end-of-driveway berms, and access roads after heavy storms by parting snow to both sides simultaneously. Box plows and pushers move maximum volume on large open parking lots without side spillage — the fastest way to clear a large flat area.
For the windrow method, plow in long parallel passes across the lot, pushing snow toward the designated stacking area. Start from the building side and push outward to the perimeter. Back-drag technique clears snow from garage doors, building faces, and loading docks — drop the blade, reverse slowly, then push the pulled snow forward to the stacking area. For small lots, the circle method works best: enter and plow in a clockwise spiral from the outside in, pushing snow to the corners.

Operational Safety & Best Practices
Maintain speed between 5–15 mph while plowing. Faster speeds reduce blade control, increase surface damage risk, and spray snow onto adjacent vehicles and pedestrians. Mark all obstacles with 48-inch reflective snow stakes before the season: fire hydrants, curb stops, bollards, manhole covers, speed bumps, and landscaping islands.
Plow with the storm during extended events — make passes every 2–3 inches rather than waiting for full accumulation. This reduces equipment strain and prevents packed base layers. Load 400–800 lbs of ballast (sand tubes or salt bags) over the rear axle for traction. Avoid stacking snow higher than 6 feet — taller piles become unstable, block sight lines, and create dangerous melt-water runoff. After plowing, make a final cleanup pass along all curb lines, fire lanes, and ADA-accessible spaces — property managers inspect these first.
