Effective de-icing is as critical as snow removal itself. Material selection, application rate, and timing determine whether surfaces stay safe or become refreeze hazards. Over-application wastes money and damages landscapes. Under-application creates liability. Precision is everything. In northern Minnesota, temperatures regularly drop below the effective range of all chemical de-icers — crews must be prepared to switch to mechanical removal and sand/grit application when conditions demand it.

De-Icing Materials & Temperature Ranges

Rock salt (sodium chloride) is the most common and cost-effective de-icer, effective down to approximately 15°F — below that it becomes useless and must be supplemented or replaced. Calcium chloride works down to -25°F, generates heat as it dissolves, and is ideal for extreme cold events but costs more — deploy it strategically on high-priority surfaces. Magnesium chloride is effective to -5°F, less corrosive than calcium chloride, and safer for concrete — a good middle-ground for moderate cold.

Sand provides traction only and does not melt ice. Use it on gravel surfaces, steep hills, and when temperatures drop too low for chemical de-icers. Brine (liquid salt solution) applied 12–24 hours before storms prevents snow from bonding to pavement, making plowing faster and more complete.

  • Rock salt — effective to 15°F; most cost-effective option
  • Calcium chloride — effective to -25°F; use strategically on high-priority surfaces
  • Magnesium chloride — effective to -5°F; less corrosive, safer for concrete
  • Sand — traction only; for gravel, steep hills, and extreme cold. Below -25°F, sand is the only effective option — all chemical de-icers lose effectiveness
  • Brine — pre-treat 12–24 hours before storms to prevent bonding
  • Below -40°F — all chemical de-icers are ineffective; use mechanical removal (plowing, scraping) and sand/grit only for traction

Spreader Equipment & Application

Walk-behind push spreaders handle sidewalks and small areas — calibrate to deliver 2–4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for rock salt. Tailgate spreaders mount to a pickup and cover small-to-medium lots and driveways; adjust the flow gate and spinner speed for even distribution. V-box spreaders are high-capacity hoppers for large commercial routes, feeding material by conveyor chain to a rear spinner.

Calibrate all spreaders at season start and recheck monthly — miscalibrated spreaders waste material and leave refreeze patches. Apply salt after plowing, not before, unless pre-treating with brine. Salt applied on top of deep snow gets buried and does nothing. Avoid over-application near storm drains, lawns, and landscaped areas — salt runoff damages vegetation, contaminates water, and corrodes infrastructure. Store salt and de-icing materials in a dry, covered area; calcium chloride is hygroscopic and must be kept sealed.
