Pre-season winterization prevents mid-storm breakdowns that leave clients unserviced and crews stranded. Every piece of equipment gets inspected, serviced, and tested before the first flake falls. Salt is the most corrosive substance your equipment encounters all year — post-storm maintenance is equally critical.
Pre-Season Winterization
Test antifreeze to -40°F or lower (northern Minnesota standard), load-test batteries and clean terminals, install tire chains or snow tires, and verify all fluid levels before the first storm. Inspect plow mounts by checking all pins, bolts, and hydraulic connections, then cycle the plow through every position and inspect for leaks or slow response.
Calibrate spreaders by running them empty to verify spinner and conveyor chain operation, then test-load with material at each flow setting. Add anti-gel fuel treatment to all diesel equipment once temperatures consistently drop below 30°F, and keep fuel tanks above half-full to reduce condensation. Test all plow lights, strobe lights, backup lights, and spreader controls — carry spare fuses and bulbs in every truck.

Daily & Post-Storm Maintenance
Cold-start procedure: let glow plugs fully cycle before cranking, idle 3–5 minutes before driving, then cycle the plow slowly through all positions to warm hydraulic fluid. After every storm, rinse all equipment, undercarriages, frames, and plow assemblies with fresh water within 24 hours of salt contact — corrosion begins immediately and accelerates when equipment is stored wet.
Check hydraulic fluid level and condition before every storm. Cold fluid is thicker and slower — if the plow feels sluggish, allow additional warm-up time. Between storms, park equipment in covered or heated space when possible. If outdoor storage is unavoidable, lower plow blades to the ground to prevent cylinder creep and cover spreader hoppers. At season end, complete full service on all winter equipment before summer storage: oil changes, hydraulic fluid replacement, blade edge measurement, and corrosion treatment.
